Show A Matter ef Soul. A local hospital nurse who was In the Philippines when MaoArlhur was the big man In Manila tolls a story of that officer's experlonce with native musicians. Wben he entered the city he was saluted with a version of "There'll bo a bot time In the old town to-night;" and this popular bit of "ragtime" "rag-time" composition was played by the Filipino bands whenever he or any of bis staff made an appearance In public. Finally, MacArthur inquired why that tune was invariably played, and was told by the band leader that the regimental regi-mental bands of the American troops played It when the city was entered, and that the natives supposed It was the national air. "Well," was Mac Arthur's comment, "It Is not the national air; but It la the American spirit. Keep on playing play-ing It when we're not around If you wish; but my best advice Is that you fall In line and march to 'Yankee 'Yan-kee Doodle)'" |
