Show I PEOPLE'S SUGAR ' ; FACTORY SI M- i i Utah has increased her facilities for Ij the niamifacture of beet sugar by the li opening of the People's sugar factory B at Moroni last Saturday. The event , was one long to be remembered by H the people of San Pete county, who .turned out en masse to participate In mr. the celebration given in honor of the K opening. K Between G.000 and 7.000 people vis- H ited the plant during the day and en- H joyed the festivities. A large number W " had never before seen a plant of such V. stupendous proportion and to these it R was indeed a revelation lo visit the m, factojy and note the various processes K ' necessary to make sugar from the K- beet. At nbon the program com- I ; inenced. N. G. Stringham, secretary I of the company, was on the ground and acted as master of ceremonies. All the officers and directors of the I company were present, including jl George B. Browning, president; John ... Stringham, vice president; Samuel Stark, treasurer, and Lewis Anderson. H. C. Beauman and Andrew Anderson, j directors. At 12 o'clock the new sug- l ar factory whistle for the first time ' was blown, the blast lasting for five minutes. Led by the Manti Ladies' band the people then sang the "Star Spangled Banner" while Old Glory was being raised for the first time on the main building. George Davis, con-; con-; struction foreman for the James Stew- j j art & Co., Inc., had the honor of rais ing the flag, Mr. Davis having been the I J first on the factory grounds to begin I actual building operations last fall. ., The following p'rogram was then I carried out: : Address of welcome, George E. "Browning, president, People's Sugar I company. " Five-minute response, Adolph Merz, i j ' representing North Sanpete county. 1 I " Lewis Anderson, representing South , i Sanpete county. T. D Rees, representing Juab coun- . ty. . 1 p. m, Free lunch was served in the warehouse to all visitors. 2 p. m. The visitors 'were furnished fur-nished guides and conducted through the factory while the band pae a concert. con-cert. 3 p. m. A musical program followed by dancing was carried out In tho warehouse. The program, consisting of a vocal solo by E. L. Swalberg of Gunnison; I a reading by Miss Ada Stark of Salt Lake City; a ladies' quartet from Mt. Pleasant. Judge Cherry of Mt. Pleasant Pleas-ant and State Treasurer D. O. Larsen each made remarks in the interest of the now liberty loan, urging strongly t that the people subscribe liberally thereto. In the evening music was furnished by the Manti band and the Moroni orchestra Tor continuous danc-, ing, there being a host of people, both old and young, to enjoy it. I on |
