By this response to Italy's need tho first actual help to be extended from any of the allies much material benoflt to tho fighting forces Is expected expect-ed aa woll as oncouragement for the civil population. Italian military oxperts here agree that General Cadorna will retire with his wholo army to the now line of defense de-fense on the Tagllamento river, about 25 miles in the rear of tho present lino. On this lino tho Italians have formidable and permanent defensive works and the lino should hold unless the fortifications have been stripped of Lhelr heavy guns to placo thorn on the mountain tops surrounding the Bain-slzza Bain-slzza plateau. Theso oxperts say that it must have been clearly impossible to romovo within a few days what guns woro on tho mountain tops so they fell into tho hands of tho Auslro-Germans as an incident, to the rapid .retreat of the ftallan army. But while the loss of tho guns would keenly be folt by tho Italian army they would be of no use to tho Germans becauso In most cases thoy would have been blown up or otherwise rondered useless use-less beforo being abandoned. The fall of Udino lately General Ca-dorna's Ca-dorna's headquarters was fully expect-j ed by tho Italians here and it was said by tho oxperts that tho Italians wore resting at that point only for tho purpose pur-pose of gaining sufficient time to allow al-low the retreat under tho protection of this sallont of tho eastern and south- ern Italian armies still on Austrian soil. Last May the British war office announced an-nounced that British heavy artillery was co-operating with the Italians on the Jullen front. no |
