Show COMPLAINT AGAINST j LOCAL EXEMPTION : BOARD i j A letter has been received by the i Standard signed "Registered Men," accusing ac-cusing the local draft board of unfairness un-fairness in selecting men for the different dif-ferent quotas. Tho letter, which is self-explanatory, follows: "Editor Standard: Myself and oth-I oth-I ers, being registered men subject to I draft in the near future, naturally are interested in the prosecution of tho present draft "Our eyes aro now centered on the actions of the honorable exemption board, which we, as registered men, think Is unfair, inasmuch as exemptions exemp-tions are granted to individuals not justly entitled to same. Your paper a few days ago published the list of men who woje to leave on this draft. It gavo an account of the two alternates alter-nates brought forward, but did not mention the third. As the name of J. T. Fisher does not appear on this draft, would you please explain why7 His exemption claim was disallowed by the local board and appealed to tho district dis-trict board, which also disallowed said claim. "Now, we have as yet failed to get the board's explanation, to which wo think we are entitled. Why are married mar-ried men with families given less consideration con-sideration than a man with considerable consider-able less obligations? We are inclined inclin-ed to think that influence has been brought to bear upon members of the board. "In conclusion, wo wish to say that if favors aro shown to certain individuals, indi-viduals, there will be trouble ahead and suggest that they be fair to all concerned. For In fighting Bill, We need to drill With might and will, Ever' man. Upon Inquiries from tho board members, mem-bers, It was learned that this situation came about through the request of men, not included in the quota, that they bo allowed to go out of tholr turn. Where a man makes a request of this kind, he is permitted to go in i the list of alternates. Mayor Heywood stated that there wore many complaints filed as to the action of the board, but that the board was endeavoring to perform its dub' conscientiously and when the subject was -such a vital one as selecting men for service in the war, there were bound to be more or less criticism and accusation directed at the board. oo |
