Show WHEN CITY IMPROVEMENTS ARE NOT IMPERATIVE Last ovening the city commisslon-ers commisslon-ers officially sorved notico that the Third ward sewer could not be built during tho war period, that tho cost of labor and tho scarcity of workors made imperative tho postponing of work. This is oxactly what tho Standard has said in regard to other extraordinary extraordi-nary improvements, and yet tho question ques-tion was asked: "Are you not for improvements?" Yes, the Standard is for every improvement im-provement which will improve the people peo-ple as a whole and, in addition, wjll improve Uncle Sam's prospects of winning this torrific conflict, and Is opposed to everything which tends to lessen the fighting effloiency of this nation. If the sewer is an absoluto necessity, neces-sity, it should bo built, but if the work can be deferred to more propitious times without endangering tho lives of the home owners in the Third ward, then the higher and more Imperative demand of war's exigencies should receive re-ceive consideration. |
