Show LEWIS THREATENED TO COMMITT SUICIDE Chicago, Jan. 7. Telegrams received receiv-ed at the detective bureau here tonight to-night from Captain James Tate of the Philadelphia detective bureau, were interpreted as an acknowledgement that the murder of Maizie Colbert In Philadelphia was not solved by the suicide of Bernard W. Lewis, son of a wealthy Pittsburk family, at Atlan tic City last Thursday nighL Pittsburg, Jan. 7. A letter Bernard I Wesley Lewis wrote to his wife from New York on Liecember 11 is regarded regard-ed by his parents and friends here as the final blow needed to smash the theory of the Philadelphia police that ne killed Maizie Colbert. In this letter, let-ter, written several weeks before the sensational "onyx" girl maraer, Lewis threatened to end his life, because "1 have wrecked our lives." The letter reads: "Hotel Savoy. New York, Dec. 11, 1 1916. "Dear Laura: "1 have come to the place where there is no way out, but one, and be fore I go I must tell you, as my last words that you are the one woman I have really loved. I have wrecked our lives and I suppose the payment will be pretty severe for me my head is all befogged from all our trouble. I am trying to make this letter intelligent in-telligent to you. When I left Chicago it was to get us on our feet again, but I failed miserably, and but for my overanxieiy to have us in an old position po-sition again I wouldn't have tried it. I can't explain what I attempted and there is no help for me now. You will get our insurance, and, for what we once were to each other, please take care of daddy and mamma for the few days they have left to live and tell little Betty thai her father was sick and, God knows. I am. You have been a wonderful wife. LauraJ and I have wrecked your whole existence, exist-ence, but pray for me aud hold my ' memory now as it used lo be to you. ; Kiss Betty and daddy and mamma fori me. May you get all the blessings you deserve. This is goodbye, Laura.' to you, the truest and best woman God ever allowed to live. (Signed.) "BERNARD." Letter to Attorney. Another letter written by Lewis to i Robert J. Dodds, b Pittsburg attorney, ;nd dined New York, December 17, reads : Dear Bob. "I have taken enough of this d stuff to finish off ten men, and, as that won't do It. I am going to make sure lonicht with a bullet. You have been a good friend, but I can't stand the strain of seeing Laura, Betty and l;.: her and mother in wni "Please help Laura with insurance money. She is a wonderful woman and doesn't deserve I his trouble, but I'm payniR tonight the best I can. I'll not suffer lor this In the hereafter, because I'm not myself just tho wreck of what was once Bernard Lewis. I can't write to father and mother I've tried. Hands Examined. Before the burial of Lewis this afternoon after-noon a careful examination of marks upon his hands was made by relatives. They assert that these marks were not made by teeth. His hands, they claim, had the appearance of being, mashed, as if in a door, and they believe be-lieve the marks were received in some such manner just before his death. n" i |
