Show GERARD CALLED ON THEJARPET I State Department Cables Ambassador Am-bassador Regarding Alleged at Public Welcome Back j to Germany. Washington, Jan. 8. The report by j lhe Overseas News agency that Am-bassador Am-bassador Gerard at a public welcome j back to Germany had said that "never since the beginning of the war i have the relations between the United States and Germany "been so cordial as now" were officially inquired into by the state department today through a cable to Ihe ambasador personally. It was indicated that the report, as quoted, did not convey a true view of German-American relations which have commonly been described as I strained through the recent subma- j rine activities. Officials, in making the announcement announce-ment of the inquiry, refused to add any further comment other than that they wished io know exactly what he had said Utterances Considered Important. The action of ihe department was interpreted as evidence of the lmpor- ! tance attached to the possible effects I of such an utterance, especially upon public opinion in lhe allied countries j where published n pons have shown an Impression that the president's note was in some way connected with the central powers' peace proposal. Every effort has been made to dispel -thai belief. It believed if tho Overseas Over-seas report were allowed to go unchallenged un-challenged was prompt in making public its inquiry to the ambassador and probably will give out his repry when received. oo ltta |
