Arising from his porch seat in answer to a call from the roadway, Amos Barr Neff, 62 years of age, a lifelong resident of Mill creek and prominent as a sheepman, sheep-man, was shot to death last evening at 7:15 o'clock. The tragedy occurred occur-red In the presence of members of his family and several. neighbors, who had stopped to spend Uie evening. The murderer, an Italian, known as Larry Paul in tho vicinity, made no effort to conceal his deed, but after the shooting started for the hills, with quickly-formed posses at his heels. In the darkness of the canyons, however, how-ever, the murderer eluded his pursuers pursu-ers and had not been captured at an early hour this morning. The murder was tragic in the extreme. ex-treme. Following an evening custom, Mr. Neff, after the evening meal, had RflntPfl himself in his favorite porch chair and was chatting with members of his family and several neighbors. Shortly after 7 o'clock, before the dusk fell, Paul, the Italian, came down the roadway from Oak-wood park, which almost adjoins tho Neff home. Death Comes Quickly. When opposite the gateway to tho home he called to Mr. Neff, who started start-ed to rise from his chair as he responded. re-sponded. Before Mr. Neff had taken a step forward the Italian leveled a double-barreled shotgun at his victim and discharged two shots Into Neffs breast Mr. Neff fell unconscious to tho porch and died within a few moments. mo-ments. Cause of Fancied Wrong. A fancied wrong is the only reason given a3 plausible for the wanton murder. The Italian, giving the name of Larry Paul, It is said, first appeared appear-ed in the East Mill Creek district last winter and was employed by Amos B. Neff as a ranch hand. The past spring the Italian worked on the adjacent adja-cent farm of David Neff, a brother of Amos Neff. Not long ago Paul purchased pur-chased a horse from his former employer, em-ployer, Amos B. Neff, but had made no payment on tho purchase price. About a week ago, In an evident whim, Paul quit the scrVIce of David Neff. Upon this, Amos B. Neff, having hav-ing received no money for tho horse sold to the Italian, obtained tho return re-turn of the animal, this being accomplished ac-complished without any apparent ill-feeling ill-feeling or trouble.
