Show oo MONEY GIVEN TO TOE RED CROSS Washington. Sept. 1G Further relief re-lief work by the American Red Cross in Mexico City where thousands are dependent upon charity for food has been made possible by a contribution of ?25,000 from the Rockefeller foundation. foun-dation. Brigadier General Devol, general manager of thc Red Cross, announced tonight that he had tole-graphed tole-graphed Charles J. O'Connor, the society's so-ciety's representative In the Mexican capital, asking what money would be needed for the next thirty days and advising that all reasonable demands could be met. When the Rockefeller contribution came yesterday in response to a request re-quest from General Devol, the Red Cross' Mexican relief treasury had been empty since September 1, At that time Mr. O'Connor was notified that If funds were exhausted that it might be necessary to discontinue his work. He replied, however, that he had sufficient supplies on hand to last about three weeks longer. It Is believed that the $25,000 now in hand will keep the Mexico City establishment ifor at least another month. In the meantime other subscriptions sub-scriptions will be sought as there apparently ap-parently is no prospect of conditions In thc city improving to such an ex tent as to make relief operations unnecessary un-necessary for a long time to come. No further appeal to the general public pub-lic for contributions is contemplated. Such an appeal several months ago brought in $33,000. In his message to Mr. O'Connor, General Devol asked whether' money or supplies should be sent. |
