It is not the purpose of ihe Russian staff, however, to defend Vilna at all costs, "but only as long as the presence of an army there does not Inspire alarm." Russian garrisons at that point do not appear to be in Imminent danger, notwithstanding the fact that German operations flanking Vilna havo been carried forward farther and that German Ger-man cavalry is driving for the railway rail-way between Molodechno and Polotsk. Tho situation In that region Is described de-scribed as favorable. German cavalry noius a ironi no miles long In the form of a great bow bending east. Tho German cavalry is pushing along the railway from Svientsyany to Gulbokol. The Invaders Inva-ders are spreading out on both sides of this road and are attempting to cut the Molodechno-Polotsk lino at several sev-eral places. This, however, does not threaten the Russian retreat as the railroad running southeast from Vilna Vil-na to Minsk is strongly covered by Russian forces. It Is pointed at the war office that the favorable aspect of the position of Vilna of the Russians Rus-sians is shown further by tho fact that they continue to maintain their positions to the westward in the direction di-rection of Orani |
