Show BANQUET IN HONOR OF THEM BISHOP Salt Lake, Sept. 17. The Right Rev. Joseph S. Glass, C. M., D, D., bishop of Salt Lake, was guest of honor last night at a banquet tendered ten-dered him by the Children of Mary sodality of the Catholic churches of Salt Lake. The banquet was given at the Hotel Utah. It was attended by Bishop Glass, tho Catholic clergy of the city and by 175 young ladles. The dinner, given by the sodality in honor of the bishop, was one of the most pleasant of the various functions func-tions that have been given in honor of the new Roman. Catholc prelate. Bishop Glass was greatly touched "by the .honor accorded him and ox-pressed ox-pressed the hope that he would always al-ways -receive from the sodality the cooperation co-operation and help that his predecessor. predeces-sor. Bishop Laurence Scanlan, the beloved be-loved founder o the sodality, had received. re-ceived. Reception Held. Prior to lhe banquet an informal reception was held. In the receiving line were the Right Rev. Joseph S. Glass, C. M., D. D.; the Very Rev. Father Denis Kiely, tho Rev. Father J. J. McNally, Mrs. Edward McGur-rln, McGur-rln, Mrs. S. J. Nelligan, Miss Kath-erlne Kath-erlne Owens, Miss Mary B. Kierce and Miss Margaret Collins. During the evening a beautiful musical mu-sical program was given under the direction of Miss Genevieve Malone, violinlste of St. Mary'B cathedral. The program included harp solos by Mrs. Ddword. McGurrln and Miss Ldla Whlto. Several favorite seIectlon8 of Bishop Glass wcro played by Mrs. McGurrln, harpist; MIbs Frances Douglas, violinlste, and MIbb Adlne Brownlee, cellist- Miss Mao O'Nell sang beautifully Gounod's "Ave Maria." Ma-ria." The blessing -was aslced by Bishop Glass. The Rev. Father J. J. McNally, Mc-Nally, spiritual director of the sodality, sodal-ity, introduced Miss Nora Gleason as toaatmlstross. In a charming manner Miss Gleason introduced herself and thoso -who responded to the toasts. MIbs Kathorine Driscoll spoko of tho "Social Influence of the Sodality." Mios Margaret McMahon respondod to the toast "Our Girls." A beau-tlfnl beau-tlfnl tribute to tho new bishop of tbo diocese "was paid by Miss Margaret Collins, who spoke on "Our Bishop." Tender Phrases. In tender and loving phrases, the Very Rev. Father Denis Kloly spoke of tho personal sldo of the great missionary mis-sionary bishop, Lauronce Scanlan, in responding to the toast, "Our Beloved Founder," Father Kiely nvas the lifelong life-long friend and counselor of Bishop Scanlan and he spoke with deep feeling, feel-ing, Tho Rev. Father Joseph Sullivan Sulli-van S. M. of All Hallows collego, responded re-sponded to tho toast "Tho Catholic Societies." In a humorous vein, Mrs. John F. Fitzpatrick spoke on "The Sodalist Suffragette" Miss Anna Rotzler spoke on "Joyalty." Concluding, Bishop Glass spoke briefly in appreciation of the honor paid him by tho sodality. He said that he realized tho honor was not to him, but to the high position to which bo had been called. He praised prais-ed highly the work done by the sodality so-dality and exhorted tho young ladies to continue tho work they had so well begun. The new bishop paid a tender tribute to the memory of the late bishop of Salt Lake. |
