Salt Lake, Dec. 31 Aiming at the I ultimate inauguration of full ralua , tlons in making assessments on tax- able property, the state board of ; equalization has sent out letters to i the county commissioners of all coun , ties In the state calling for a concert ! ed effort in that direction. The Salt I Lake county commissioners received j such a letter yesterday and spent i some time studying the suggestions ; contained in it. The letter will be referred to the county assessor. The state board suggests that the various county assessors, by acting together, can gradually bring about the full valuation system, and the var ious county commissioners can, at the same time, gradually reduce the jevj so that no additional tax will be pluc-ed pluc-ed upon the people as a whole. "It is not the desire of the board to increase the taxes," the letter says, "except to fulfill the law, but It does believe in a full valuation, gradually attained, and the application of low rates of levy " In keeping with this belief, the board effected an Increase of 14 per cent In the valuations placed on property pro-perty under Its jurisdiction In 1913. as compared to 1912.. whereas the average av-erage increase made by the various County assessors was but 4.5 perl cent. Attention is called to the necessity of more accurate assessments on live-Stock. live-Stock. The board suggests that the average sheep be assessed at $2 and the average cattle at $20 a head, with variations, of course, to meet the differences dif-ferences In grades. The board strongly strong-ly urges that all herds be assessed at the full number and that personal Inspection In-spection be made whenever possible to ascertain the full number of every herd closer cheek of all improvements and machinery of mining companies is urged, so as to eliminate the differences dif-ferences that have existed In the pa6t between the valuations fixed by the assessors, the owners and the state board Many other suggestions, intended to improve the system of taxation as much hs possible under the present taxation laws, are contained In the letter from the state board |
