Show CANAL BOARD IS CALLED TO STAND New York, Jan. 28. Members -of the state canal board who refused In 1912 to grant a contract to James I C. St.owart after an alleged attempt ! by JameB E. Gaffney, political associate, asso-ciate, to Charles " F, Murphy, to exact a political contribution from 'him, will appear tomorrow before the grand jury which is investigating the transaction. This was announced at District Attorney Whitman's office of-fice today. None of the board members, most of whom are still in office, has been subpoenaed, but several have promised prom-ised to appear at Mr. Whitman's request All will be called on to explain before the jury the reason for refusing refus-ing to award the contract to Stewart, whose bid was many thousand dollars dol-lars lower than any other. oo |
