Show THE WORLD'S MARKET NEWS New York, N. Y., Jan. 28. Buylug of stocks was less confident today, but pressure was not severe and prices hardened after the opening decline. Reports that the Mexican problem was assuming a more troublesome aspect were cited in explanation of the reluctance of traders to extend operations on the long side. Although earnings of United States Steel for the last quarter came up to the general expectations, bears sought to make capital of the fact that they did not equal the more bullish estimates of the last few days. Reading was pushed up materially. The tobacco stocks, and. other investment invest-ment shares also made a good showing show-ing but the general upturn wns slow. By' noon the level was still slightly below yesterday's close. Bonds were irregular. The market closed steady. Rapid slaokenlng of the demand for stocks tempted the bears to make a concerted demonstration against the list in the final half hour. Reading lost all of its rise and the general level sagged again to fractionally frac-tionally below yesterday's closing. Kansas City Livestock. Kansas City, Mo., Jan. 28.
