Show HARD FIGHT IN DETROIT, MICH, Detroit," Mich , Jan. 14 Except for a flash in the first round and a momentary mo-mentary flicker in the eighth, Joe Mandot of New Orleans never had a chance to beat Johnny Griffith of Akron, Ak-ron, Ohio, in the Windsor nrena tonight to-night The entire eight rounds bristled with action. Mandot started as though he were going to make short work of the Ohio Irishman, stepping lightly in and out and peppering Griffith Grif-fith anywhere he liked. When the second round opened, however, Griffith rushed from his corner and flashed his famous left to j Mandot's jaw. The blow all but lifted lift-ed the French lad from his moorings. ' Then Griffith proceeded to demon strate to the satisfaction of all that the blow was not a chance one by rc-peatlng rc-peatlng it several times. Mandot came back viciously in the third, evidently determined to make up the ground he had lost, but his enthusiasm en-thusiasm waned when Johnny peppered pep-pered him with lefts. To the amusement of all. Griffith repeatedly landed on Joe's midsection with his port hook, quickly snapping it to the jaw. making two clean scores every time he attempted the trick Mandot crouched to avoid this punishing pun-ishing blow, but Griffith imrapdiatelv uncovered another angle to his left, uppercutting Joe and straightening him up In a convincing manner. At the end of the round Mandot was a bit wobbly and walked unsteadily to hlr. corner Griffith grow a bit careless in the fourth round and as a consequence Mandot got in some hard blows, but the mauling the southern lad received in the second and third rounds took the steam out of his wallops The sixth and seventh were Griffith's Grif-fith's rounds in handy fashion. A pivot punch, when coming out of a clinch in the seventh, put Mandot on the road to better things in the eighth. He landed hard on Griffith s jaw and it plainly slowed up the Ohioan. Joe then stepped out and did some nice work and was putting It on his opponent when the final gong sounded. |
