Show LABOR HONS OF TIE CITY TO GO BACK TOA.F.OFL. Through the re-organization of the Ogden Trades and Labor assembly, which is to occur at its next meeting, new life is to be injected into trado unions of the city. Such was the statement of Secretary' William Pig got of the assembly, yesterday, siiuit-ly siiuit-ly after he received the new charter crom the American Federation of La bor. The Ogden Trades and Labor assembly as-sembly was organized January 3, 1901, with W. S. Flewelling as chairman of the meeting. Two years later a charter char-ter from the American Federation of Labor was applied for and on February Febru-ary 28, 1905, was received. From that time, until the latter part of tho year 190S, the organization did considei-able considei-able work in advancing the interests of organized labor in Ogden and in the state. This was accomplished largely through affiliation with the A. F. of L.f but in December, 1908. the A. F. of L. charter was revoked by that organization. The reason for i he revocation was the refusal of the local assembly to unseat the delegates of local union 316, International Brc- therhood of Electrical Workers. This was at the time of the separation of the International Brotherhood of Elec trical Workers into two factions', known as the McN'ulty and the Reed Murphy Ogden local 316, I. B. E. W . sided with the Reed-Murphy faction in the controversy. Following the decision of the A. F. of L. to uphold the McN'ulty faction as the official body of Electrical Workers, orders were sent out to the affiliated trades and labor assemblies, to unseat the delegates of the recalcitrant local electrical workers' unions. A refusal to obey the order wa3 to be followed by the revocation of the charter. Over a large portion of the country, coun-try, especially in the west, organlzi i labor in general was in sympathy with the Reed Murphy faction of the I. I E. W., and many of the city, central bodies refused to comply with the order. The members of local 31C of Ogden had always been prominent in the affairs of the Trades and La bor assembly, acting on committees, etc., and when the choice of breaking with the American Federation of Labor, La-bor, or with its friends m local 31G, the Ogden Assembly decided by a unanimous vote to break with the former. Since that time it has worked work-ed as an independent organization. According to President George M. Thenn, Secretary. William Piggott anJ other officers of the assembly, the revocation of the charter had proved eomewhat of a setback to the movement move-ment of organized labor here. esjx-cia iy during the past two years. After a serious discussion of the situation application for a new charter was made several days ago. It Is expected expect-ed that all local unions, v. hose International Inter-national organizations are . affiliated with the American Federation of Labor, La-bor, will join the local Trades and Labor assembly soon after its le-or ganization. "The' local painters and plumbers have re organized their unions," said Secretary Piggott yesterday, "and the outlook for organized labor In Ogdeu is very bright " |
