Show MONSON HEAD OF EASTERN STATES MISSION W. P. Monson, president of the Eastern East-ern States mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of letter-Day Saints, is visiting with his family in'Ogdon. Mr. Mongon was. a resident of Ogden until he was called to the position which he now oenpies, owing to the death of Pres. Ben J5. Rich, and he took up his duties last October. His trip home was mainly .for the purpose of attending attend-ing the general conference of the church, which will be held In Salt Lake City next week, and he will go back to the New York headquarters immediately after the conference. He will move his family there at the close of the present school year. Mr. Monson states that when he left New York there was two feet of snow on the level, old New Yorkers saying that the late storm was the worst In 72 years. On his way to the west, the train on which he was riding, ran over and killed a man, east of Omaha, which occurrence marred the pleasure of the trip to quite an extent. The New York branch of the church he says, is in fine condition, there being be-ing over 150 people In the Utah colony alone. Among them are Mrs. David Eccles and six children, Mr. and Mrs. Edward" Tout" and family, and Mrs. Heber Hancoclf.. William S. Wright and a number of other Ogden people. The missionaries arc working persistently persist-ently In the performance of their duties, du-ties, tractlng from 20 to 2G hours a week, in adition to attending special meetings and holding street meetings. The members of the branch anticipate the erection of a. suitable church building build-ing In which to hold their services. This matter will be taken up by Pres. Monson with the general church authorities au-thorities while he is in Utah and he Is sanguine of getting their approval and assistance. During his residence in Ogden, President Pres-ident Monson was manager of the Eccles Lumber company and while In the east he has observed business conditions con-ditions to quite an extent. He says that the financiers are looking toward to-ward tho west for investment and that all that the people of the west need to do to get capital interested, Is to give proper encouragement. |
