Show AFTER reservation LAND nearly 2000 land seekers registered at provo yesterday provo aug 10 the registration yesterday was 1955 making a total of registered in provo large crowds were here from ogden and salt lake and many are expected today from the south senator smoot aho vho took up the matter of securing the admission ot teamsters traveling with registered partie to the reservation received a telegram captain hall at fort duchesne stating that he had instructed the soldiers to permit such team to enter the reservation they must how ever go before a notary public and make affidavit that they are going on the reservation tor no other purpose than that as teamsters giving their nam and the names ozithe persons for whom they are driving the telegram further states that registered applicants or land going into the reservation for the purpose of inspection spec tion will be permitted to taka members ot their family with them there it considerable dissatisfaction on the part of business men over the refusal of the railroad companies to run excursions to provo during the time of registration they claim that the railroads are willing to run excursions cur from provo but none to prove and they do flot like it the question has been raised whether people are permitted to go on the land lately withdrawn from entry and set apart as a forest reserve for the purpose of commissioner richards was anaed the question he stated hat he did not know ho biad nothing todo to do with forest reserves the reclamation service or the geological survey and he did not want to say that men could or could not go on the reserve to prospect mr was in charge of the forest reserves and his ranga rs were in immediate charge of he land embraced in this reserve commissioner lUc hards was of the opinion however hat athla forest reserve was like any other forest re servo that is as far as ho cared to state the only logical conclusion to be drawn from this provided it Is like other forest reserves and the same rules govern Is that men can go on tho reserve and prospect and locate mines as they can on other forest reserves the maps of the portion of the reservation er subject to entry are not yet completed that js maps showing the portions of land allotted to indians reserved for the reclamation service selected by the raven company etc until they can be obtained persons who go on tho reservation to belech land are at a great disadvantage the land they select may be a portion of that withdrawn from entry ot course they can get a general idea of the lay of the land but so far as selecting a quarter section for ing provided their numbers are drawn early and they havo choice of the basi land that is a matter of a great deal of uncertainty tho maps he sections of ednd that can be entered will be hare next week there wll not be enough for general distribution but at the time of the drawing each person who draws a number that entitles him to land tho cumbers for which there Is sufficient land to enable the holder to get a quarter section will be supplied with one of these maps and he can then go to the reservation and make his selection between the time he draws and the timo he Is required to enter the land at vernal this time will be at least ten days those having high numbers will have a longer time the date when entries begin at vernal is aug 28 and the first settlers will have from the to the to select their land entries being made each day at the land office thoss who go on the land between now and the time of the drawing will have some advantage in the general knowledge obtained of the topography of the country character of soil etc but that Is about all there is one advantage that those who go to select land will have that Is that the country has been lately surveyed and the surveyors stakes are or should be in such condition as to be a great help to the settler in getting the legal subdivisions of the land in addition to this mere win be many locators who will be to help the settler make his selection for a consideration if reliable parties are engaged for the purpose they will prove a help and possibly an indispensable help to some of the homesteaders there are reported to be gratteri grat on hand to do this work that they propose to show a man a good piece of land even if it h already taken and then give him a description for his filing of some other land not as good or possibly worthless pocket the fee and be gone before the discovers the fraud it the homesteader goes on the land himself and inspects the surveyors markings such deception would beem impossible it the homesteader uses ordinary caution and intelligence it will be safe however if assistance of this character is needed to obtain it from reputable people and firms with w horn the Is acquainted personally or by reputation governor cutler received a formal communication from acting commissioner of the land office J H fimple i in answer to the petition urging the location of a registration office for the uintah drawing in salt lake city the letter simply tells of the disposition of the petition sir letter states that the petition was referred to president roosevelt the president received the petition about the time of the less attacks on richards the executive passed the matter up to the general land office with ahe simple comment respectfully referred to the commissioner of the general land office the acting assures the petitioner that there Is now no time or apparent necessity for opening a registration office in salt lake |
