Show SHEEPnERDER Salt Lake, May 7. Two confidence men, representing themselves as Chief of Police B. F. Giant and Police Inspector "Anderson," drugged and ! robbed W. D. Bailey of McGlll, Nev , of $600 some time between Saturday night and yesterday morning Bailey recovered consciousness nearly yesterday yes-terday morning, missed his money'and reported to the police. Bailey came to town from Nevada Friday afternoon, bringing with him 5700, representing many months' salary sal-ary as a sheep herder. He acquired many friends about town as the size of his roll of bills became known Saturday Sat-urday he sns intioduced to "Chief Grant" and "Inspector Anderson." The latter assured him that he had better follow them because thoy would be able to saYe him from grafters and their ilk. "I lost consciousness after my third drink with these two men," said Bailoy. 'I have a faint recollection that the fellow who said he as the chief of pollco slipped something Into my whiskey. I don't care so much about the money, because I can get more where that came from, but I'd like to get even with those fellows " When searched at tho police station Bailey had $35 In a secret pocket. He was overjoyed when the police found this money for him, declaring ho had supposed tho swindlers had left him penniless. H. C. Mouscr of Long Beach, Cal., reported to the police yesterday that ho had been robbed of $140 by two confidence men In the grounds of the city and county building. H0 was drawn Into a dollar matching gamo by one of the men who declared ho had a "sucker" on tho string from whom Mouser could double his raonoy. Mouscr accompanied fcb.e two men to the Oregon Short Line depot before he suspected he had been robbed. He demanded his money back and when this was refused he called an officer Patrolman Pitts arrested one of the men, who gave his name of O W Miller The other escaped Miller va.z charged with vagrancy and was released re-leased In pollco court yesterday afternoon after-noon on a suspended sentence with (he Injunction that he leave Salt Lake before sunset Miller returned $75 to Mojser upon being taken to the pollco station He said the other man got away with the rest of the money. : oo |
