Show SAID HELLO AND THEN HITJIM It took four men to make a Greek talk English today, in a case wherein :John Damianos was charged with assault as-sault upon the person of Gust Lem-propolis, Lem-propolis, and after that case was heard another case In which Damianos charged Lempropolis with assault was called. Four witnesses were used In the casp, and as near as the testimony could be gathered, Gust met John on Twenty-fifth street, said "Hello." and slapped him on the neck. The mix-up took place. Gust says John bit his finger and hit him In the face, while John contends that he merely touched Gust on the neck for fun, and that Gust kicked him furiously at least three times. Steve Popos, who runs a shine stand on Twenty-fifth street, testified as to what he saw of the fight, but his recollection was a trifle hazy, and when asked if either man wa6 his friend, he said: ,fNo, sir, I ain't Rot frlonds. My pockets are my friends, that't all I goL" When placed on the stand Gust was quite sure he could not talk English but h 6iicceeded In using English while he was informing the court that he would have to talk Greek, and he was finally persuaded to carry on a conversation In United States The judge heard both complaints, weighed the evldonce as carefully as such evidence could be weighed apparently, ap-parently, Rnd then fined Gust $15 or 15 days, and John $25. or 25 days. Gust Immediately appealed his case |
