Show THE PROGRAM AT GLEIWOOD PARK Tho major portion of the Labor Day colebration was scheduled for the afternoon and evening and several sev-eral thousand 'people assembled at Glenwood Park to witness an excellent excel-lent program of athletic events which began shortly alter 1 o'clock and lasted last-ed until a late hour last evening. Valuable prizes were awarded for athletic events In which men, women and children participated. During tho aftornoon the decision of the judges on the parade competition was announced. The first prize for tho best industrial float went to the ci-gurmakcrs' ci-gurmakcrs' union and the second was awarded to the brewery workers. For the best representation made by any local union the first prize w6ut to tho blacksmiths' union of the Federation of Shopmen. Immediately following the program of races and other athletic events in the afternoon came tho wrestling match at the saucer track. This took place about 5 o'clock There wa' a main event, picceded by a number of good preliminaries. The participants In the main event on the program were James Cleary aud T. F. PreBhaw, local lightweight wrestlers. Cleary won the bout In two straight falls, gaining tho first iun in iuur minutes anu tno secona In 2Q minutes. The bout was restricted restrict-ed to 40 minutes. In the preliminaries, all of which were wrestling bouts, John Slmister gained one fall over John Prcshaw; Clarence Prcshaw and C. L. Wallace wrestled fifteen minutes to a draw; Rankin Smurthwalle secured one fall from Phrcnlous Monson and Harland Payton wrestled to a draw with C. It. Raty. The motor races in the evening did not prove to be a marked success. Owing to trouble with tho racing machines, ma-chines, the start Was delayed until almost 0 o'clock and many of those whohad gathered to see the events left the track. An nccident in the five-mile motor race marred tho pro-giam. pro-giam. The closing number on the celebration celebra-tion program was dancing -at the big open air pavilion and several hundred dancers enjoyed this feature of the day's entertainment until tho midnight mid-night hour. .nn |
