Show YOUiNG ENGINEER' FACED DEATH New York, Sept. 9 The story of the heroism of a steamship officer, .who risked his life In order that his vessel ves-sel should not be delayed, was tol-1 here on the arrival from Liverpool of the belated Cunarder Campania. Two days after leaving Queenstown, the chief engineer found that soma serious mechanical trouble had developed de-veloped In the center turbine. In order or-der to use "the remaining turbines, it was necessary to go in.o the drum of the center turbine and shut some doors. The engines were stopped and there was in 'prospect a wait of several sev-eral hours while tho center turbine cooled off enough for a man to enter en-ter it. It was then that third engineer A. C. McCutchcon volunteered to go Into the manhole and do the njacos-sary njacos-sary work with wrench and hammer. The thermometer showed 200 degrees de-grees at the mouth of the manhole, but tho young- engineer entered tho turbln and stayed insldo five minutes. He then came out for air and returned again four times Altogether he stayed stay-ed in tho terrific temperature Jfor some twenty minutes. Later Captain Dow called him to his cabin and formally commended him for his bravery. |
