Show PFfiPIF WASHINGTON, April 13 A 4- bill providing for the election 4- of United States senators by dirqet vote of the people and 4- removing tho elections from 4- 4- federal control passed the 4- house tonight by a vote of 4- 4- 29G to 16. 4- - - WASHINGTON, April 13. The house of representatives by a vote of 296 to 16 late today passed the Ruckcr resolution pioposing a constitutional con-stitutional amendment for the direct election of United States senators This Is the first of the Democratic program measures passed by the hous'e It went through without modification modi-fication and with a speed that brought protests from the Republicans. The resolution, as the house approved it, is in the form of the Borah resolution reported out of the senate judlclarv committee in the closing days of the last congress Republican opposition to tho Ruckcr resolution in the house was based on the fact that it did not contain the changes afterwards made in the fight in the senate, which assured as-sured to congress continued control over elections In the several states. After six hours of debate, in which many demands were made for this change in the resolution, all but 15 Republicans voted for tho resolution. The majority of them had stated during dur-ing the debate that they would support sup-port the resolution because convinced that the public wanted such a constitutional consti-tutional amendment submitted to the country as quickly as possible Those Opposed to Bill.
