According to Captain Osbon. he, was ihere as a -war correspondent" "Wherr tho bombardment of the fort began and he has what he says is part of the fort's flag The rest ot the flag, he adds, is safe with the relics of t;he war department. Lowell. Mass.. April 14. Doubts are expressed in this city by frionds of Miss Ellzn Cowlej, who Btated her belief be-lief a few days ago that she had In her possession the flag that floated over Fort Sumter during Its bombardment, bombard-ment, as to whether the emblem Is a genuine relic. It is pointed out that tho flag In Miss Cowley's possession has more stars than there were statos In the union at the date of the opening open-ing of the Civil war. Miss Cowley based her claim on the belief entertained by her brother, now dead, who was close to military authorities au-thorities of the Civil war. that the flag was the one under which Major Anderson and his little garrison fought. |
