Show ' PAY OF UTAH LEGISLATORS. H Senate joint resolution No. 6, providing better compensation for H members of the Utah legislature than is now given, should pass. H The resolution proposing an amendment to the constitution, H which fixes the pay of legislators at $4 a day, calls for ?6 per day H and ten cents mileage. That is none too great a compensation for M men called away from their regular occupations to temporarily serve M the state. Nevada pays ?8 a day and the mileage is double that al- H lowed in Utah. H Our legislators should be allowed sufficient compensation so H that any man in the ordinary walks of life could aspire to the high H office of law-maker with assurance that, if elected, he would be H fairly rewarded for his services. A man. of money can go to the H legislature and make no considerable sacrifice even though there H be no monetary reward, but any one on an average salary and de- H pendent on that salary, must suffer a financial loss under present H conditions, if he accepts a call to the legislature. That is wrong and H the per diem compensation should be increased to overcome that H objectionable feature in the constitution. |
