Feb. 1C Representative Representa-tive Lloyd of Missouri and Representative Represen-tative Southwlck of New York exchanged ex-changed sharp words and Delegate WIckorshnm from Alaska and John Steele, attorney for the Guggenheim-Morgan Guggenheim-Morgan Alaska intcrestests, questioned question-ed each other' veracity when the House committee on territories reopened re-opened the hearing on tho bill to exempt ex-empt the Copper River & Northwestern Northwest-ern railway from payment of the Alaska Alas-ka railroad license tax. The control of the railroad by the Guggenheim and Morgan Interests had been admitted by Mr. Steele. He Insisted, In-sisted, however, that the road was designed to be a common carrier, and not simply an outlet for the Guggenheim-Morgan bonanza mines. "I think this committee ought to vote to postpone the bill," said Representative Repre-sentative Lloyd. "It is difficult to show the House that the Morgan or Guggenheim interests need any relief." "It Is a disgrace for any member of congress to urge such an argument," Interjected Representative Southwlck. "The gentleman from Now York has never shown anv Interest in the sessions ses-sions of the committee except on the statehood measures and this bill," retorted re-torted Representative Lloyd. Tho committee asked Delegate Wlckersham If he wanted to cross-examine Mr. Steele and the other lawyers law-yers who have appeared In support of the railroad. "I certainly do," snid Mr. Wicker-sham. Wicker-sham. "I intend to present some proofs and say somethings ho ,tho committee and Mr. Steele had best be hero when I do It." "I don't noed to be here," retorted Mr. Steele; "you have said things to other committees about Alaskan affairs af-fairs that were not true." "That is not so," said Mr. Wlckersham. Wlcker-sham. The committee decided to go to the bottom of the Alaskan matter.
