Show HALF-BREED INDIAN III LEO IS RIVAL Provo, June 26 Further particulars partic-ulars of the killing of Ab Murdock at Red Creek, about fhirtv miles oast of Heber City on the Uintah reservation, reserva-tion, Saturdaj afternoon, by Deputy Sheriff A B. Souggs and a companion named 'Henry, from Evapston, Wyo!, came to the sheriff's office 'here today. to-day. IL js- said,1 that Muidock and h companion made a, raid on the ranches ranch-es near Evnnston .last week and stole thirty-five head of valuable Percheron horses nnd drove them south across the Utah lino Into the Uintah reser-vation. reser-vation. Deputy Sheriff Souggs followed fol-lowed the trail of the horse thieves to (ho Utah line and -went back to Evapston and took the. train for Utah, 'bringing Henry, owner of some- of tho stolen horses, along with' him to identify the horses. Souggs and Henry came direct to Provo and from here went to Heber City, and with the assistance of Deputy Dep-uty Sheriff Gudmundson of Heber City got on the trail of the men near T tho Murdock ranch on Red creek.1 Souggs and Henry secreted themselves them-selves in the rocks some distance fiom the ranch while Gudmundson went on following the trail After the men separated a short time Murdock came along tho road leading two horses and riding another. When opposite op-posite tho Wyoming officers Murdock was ordered to throw up his hands and surrender, but Instead of doing so reached for his gun, showing every Indication that ho intended to rosist. Tho officers had the drop on the halt bleed and when he showed fight two rifle shots rang out as one shot, and Ab Murdock was in tho happy hunting hunt-ing grounds Deputy Sheriff Gudmundson camo to Heber City and reported the killing, and, In company with the acting coroner cor-oner of Wasatch county, went back to the scene this morning. A coroner's Inquest will be held today Ab Murdock, who was about 40 years of age and who was born and reared In Wasatch county, was a half-breed half-breed Indian and hnd beon looked upon up-on for many years as a bad man He had at least one murder to his credit, cred-it, and tho number of horses ho had stolen, according to the pfflcers here, would be Impossible to enumerate Murdock shot nnd killed Ernest Olds at Mantl in 1889 or 1890, nnd for this crime he was tried in the First dia-tilct dia-tilct court at Provo nnd sentenced to tho territorial prison for a terra of years The crime of killing young Olds wns a rold-blooded and premedittaed one, according to people here who remember the affair. Murdock was enamored of a girl whose home was In Manti, and, finding that the girl was partial to Olds, a handsome young man of the same town, the Indian laid in wait nnd shot his rival to death from ambush with a Winchester rifle. Murdock onlv served a pnrt of bis sentence and was pardoned |
