Show CAPITOL SITE IS UNCERTAIN Salt Lake, Juno 25. As a mark of courtesy to tho xeal estate men who have tendered ground on the southeast south-east bench as a proposed capltol site 'and are urging that the capltol be moved to that location, members of tho state capltol commission went out In automobiles with Joseph Kimball yesterday afternoon to look over the ground offered by the real estate men. The trip was made, however with tho understanding that the members of the commission were not in favor of making any change In the location and were of thg firm opinion that they could not make a change if they so desired because of the working of tho law providing for the buildinjr of tho state house. The commission was called together togeth-er at 2 o'clock in the office of Governor Govern-or William Spry. Mr Kimball, as a special refDpiesentatlve of the men who are offering to donate land on Ninth South, between Fourteenth and fifteenth East streets for the cap-tol cap-tol site, was present and extended an invitation to the members of the commission to accompany him in automobiles auto-mobiles to the sl,te and inspect it. The matter of, the agitated change was presented to commission by Governor Gov-ernor Spry and It was discuss'ed Informally In-formally It was the unanimous opinion opin-ion of the commission that no change in location of the capltol could possibly pos-sibly be made unless a special session of the Legislature was called and authorized au-thorized the change, or tho matter was laid over until the next regular session of the Legislature and a change was authorized at that time. Would Be Lost to State. The Governor dallcd attention to the fact, In addition to the wouliug of the law, which says that :he money appropriated to build it on the capitol grounds, that the state had already spent something like 370,000 on the capltol site on the north bench, and if the state failed to use the ground for a capitol oulldin it would rcert back to Salt Lako Clt- and thy money spent on it by the S.-.ite in improve ments would be lost tc the state. However, It was suggested bv the roviTn-ir that on t,f roui'-sv t: the men who had .made a generous ottnr of land for a capital building site in the southeastern portion of the city, the mentbers of the commission should accept the Invitation to ride out and look over the ground. This was agreed o by the members mem-bers of the commission "and shortly after 2 o'clock the party leftt in automobiles auto-mobiles and spent an :uir or more looking over the propu-1 location. Another meeting of tho commission WJ-J uue Qeld in the" near future, -at which details of the nrcniterturc of the capltol will be discussed and the recommendations of tho commission as to the style of the building to be built, will be formulatad. |
