Show I HOPE FOR THE AGED The aged people of Utah have been given hope for additional relief through the request made to the Welfare Board by Governor Herbert B. Maw that they arrange to conform a little more to the law that was enacted at the last state legislature. .That law allowed an aged dependent up to $30.00 per month with the privilege of earning an additional $10.00 without its being deducted from the amount of assistance. With the increased cost of living this added income will help maintain a worthy standard of living. Then, too, the governor has asked the Welfare Board to assume the responsibility of giving medical assistance thereby relieving the counties of the same. There is merit, we feel, in the extra $10.00. It is unquestionably more honorable for a person to put his time to something useful whenever health and ambition ambi-tion suggests it rather than to just sit around. It is true that as one grows older he sometimes "sits and thinks and at other times he just sits," but when, the urge comes to be useful by helping a neighbor in his work he should be encouraged to do so without having to report the few dimes received for that work to the welfare board. Thrift should not be hampered, especially espe-cially at this time. There have been, no doubt, many an elderly lady who would have busied herself at some knitting, mending, quilt making, or rug making had she been privileged to do so without the case worker embarrasing her by asking questions as to what she did with the finished article and if sold how much she received for it. A person, no matter how young or how old, yearns for a little independence. A quarter or a half dollar received re-ceived for one's handiwork enriches the soul, for the recipient feels that he or she is not a burden, but a help to someone. The sentiment expressed in the following few lines, the author of which is unknown, will perhaps express the hope of every young and able bodied person: "When I grow old, God grant that every child will feel the youthful youth-ful texture of my soul and will not turn away from me as from a vine or shrunken tree, When I grow old. "When I grow old, God grant that I will have a task that must be done or someone fare the worst, that in some corner of the earth someone will need my hand, ; , v, i When I grow old." ..' ,.
