Show WORK BEGINS ON AIRPORT TOWER Steel for Project Obtained in Salt Lake City Initial Construction Project Nearly Near-ly Complete. Construction of a control tower last major project of the half-million half-million dollar Logan-Cache airport, is now underway, City Engineer Erwin U. Moser, reported Monday. Excavation for the tower footings foot-ings has been completed, he said, and work will now progress rapidly. rapid-ly. Mr. Moser and City Commissioner Commission-er George B. Bowen obtained 10-tons 10-tons of used steel for building the control tower last week form old buildings in Salt Lake City and Midvale. The steel has been moved to the field and work can progress pro-gress without "priority delays", Mr. Moser said. Lighting work is well under way, and crews are cleaning up the last stages of the first construction contract and starting work on new projects to be financed by a recent $161,000 additional federal appro- . priation. Runway lighting will be included in the new grant along with an extension to drainage facilities, and doubling of flume and siphon capacity in an irrigation system at the field. The expanded program also calls for the oiling of all three of the big runways and all taxi strips. Two of the runways and taxi strips originally were scheduled to be graveled only. A two-way radio station will be included in the control tower and the control operator will have control con-trol of all lighting on the field. He will be able to communicate at all times with pilots landing and taking off from the field when the tower is completed. Airport officials predicted that a meterological statoin may be in-I in-I stalled at the port when other instruction is comp.etea. |
