Show Oiling of Streets, j Other Projects j Spur Activities; Beginning this week there is : underway in Milford another! major improvement program which will, on completion, accom-( accom-( plish further progress in making the community even more attractive attrac-tive to home people and visitors alike. The shrt side streets intersecting intersect-ing Main street, though amply surfaced with gravel for many years past, have been bumpy and pitted no matter how much work has been done on them, it seems. Also, traffic off these side streets has brought quantities of dust and gravel onto Main street, besides making the intersections anything but pleasant for the pedestrian. lA 11 of this will soon be a thing of the past, however, insofar as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Avenue? South are concerned with railroad rail-road property west of the station included for good measure. All of these streets are going to be oiled under the direction of the state road commission oiling crew, i with money for the town's portion of the cost coming from Milford's participation in the the state auto liense plate fund, part of which was made available to cities, towns and counties by the 1937 legislature. The Union Pacific system sys-tem will, of course, defray the expense ex-pense of oiling (the street west of the station, which is railroad property and which has been the worst of all the sections to be improved. im-proved. The streets to be improved have been wetted down by town employes em-ployes this week, followed by extensive ex-tensive working and grading by state equipment), but just when the oiling crew will be here is not known. The parking project on both' sides of Stoddard street in the vicinity of the new library building build-ing is also fast taking form, with curbing being laid the full length of the project, while a bull-dozer in exceedingly expert hands is busy working over the face of the hill to get it into shape for planting plant-ing to shrubbery, mlostly of native varieties. Part of the area at the south end will be transformed into tennis courts. 'Also begun this week was work on the new service station toeing erected by Bernett Swindlehurst of Beaver for lease to Standard Stations, Incorporated. This building build-ing will cost some $3500, with about as much more to go into equipment, and is being erectted on the comer of Main street and Fourth avenue, formerly the site of frame structures owned by R. A. B. Hatch of San Diego. This building, modern in every respect and specially adapted to what is considered one of the best corners on Main street, will be a distinct) asset to the business section and Mr. Swindlehurst is to be commended com-mended on his enterprise and industry in-dustry since coming into .possession .posses-sion of the property, only a few month ago. The station is being erected by a Salt Lake contractor who has contracts for a number of similar structures. Another building, still more or less in the discussion stage but which will contribute to the beauty beau-ty and utility of the new parkl area, is a structure for use by the local American Legion post. This will consist of club rooms and basement in which will be located a kitchen, it is understood. The structure will be of railroad ties, stuccoed similar to some very attractive at-tractive buildings said to have been contructed with ties in Oali-ente. Oali-ente. This building would be located lo-cated in the rear of the Smith apartments, utilizing a basement already on the premises. The local Legion and Auxiliary hsve made many efforts to secure quarters of their own in the past but to little avail. A couple of vears ago the organization made arrangements with 'Albert Pike Masonic lodge to use the ground-floor ground-floor of the lodge hall and considerable con-siderable work was done in the way of fitting the place up for Legion purposes. But when the lodge gave up, for the time being at least, the idea of building a new hall, it was necessary to use the lower floor for reinforcing purposes forcing the Legion to look elsewhere for quarters. |
