Show GALICIAN Oil WELLS FIRED BY THE RUSSIANS When the Russians captured part of Galicia, with the oil fields at Boryslav, their oil supply was at such a low state that they drew on the wells to their utmost capacity. The Austrians, cut off completely from their main supply of oil, fought desperately to drive the Russians out. This they succeeded in doing only to find, on their return to Boryslav, the oil wells on fire. This remarkable picture of the progress of the fire was made shortly after they had been fired by the retreating Russians. The boring towers in the foreground were blown up by the czar's army. |
