Show Injured in Car Accident July 18. Winford Peterson is in a Grand Junction, Colorado hospital suffering suffer-ing from injuries he received in a car accident on July 18. He and two companions were returning from a dance when the car hit a soft shoulder and roled over. Win-ford Win-ford was cut about the head, his collar bone was broken and his pelvis was broken in two, and pos-siblv pos-siblv three places. He is out of danger at present and will be moved to the home of his sister, Mrs. James Bin-ell, of Grand Junction, while he is recovering. recov-ering. It is expected to take about three months for him to fully recover re-cover from the injuries. Pfc. Bud Holilngshead spent an enjoyable three weeks at home after returning to the States. Leo Hollingshead and Calvin Skeem drove Bud, to Hawthorne, Nevada, where he will be stationed for an indefinte time. Going to Nevada the ran into some heavy floods. After Bud was safely at his base Leo and Calvin went on through Nevada and the canyons of southern south-ern Utah. T5 Duane Sampson, son of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Sampson, who has been stationed on the Philippine Philip-pine and Hawaiian Islands for the past year, was discharged from the army July 25th. He and his wife, Phyllis and son, Dennis, came to Delta, from Lehi, to visit his parents par-ents and their friends, Saturday and Sunday. Private Elwood H. Mortensen, son of Elwood G. and Violet M. S Mortensen of Delta, is in San ' "4,""igo, California undergoing his 8 JtJeks recruit training as a mem-Voer mem-Voer of the thirty man "Pioneer Pla-' Pla-' toon" that was enlisted in Salt Lake City on the 24th of July. The platoon was sworn in by Captain Maynard W. Schmidt in ceremonies held in the Federal Building. Earl J. Glade, Mayor of Salt Lake City congratulated the group upon their enlistment in the Marine Corps. Private Mortensen is a graduate of Delta High. His relatives and friends will see the young Marine again soon when he returns in October Oc-tober on his 10 day "boot camp" furlough. USMC Pfc. Ray Gardner, who has been stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, is home on a two weeks' furlough. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Gardner, and Glen and Elaine Gardner, Gar-dner, and Ray returned Monday from a week's trip driving through the Yellowstone Park and the Grand Teton National Park. Richard L. Smith, Seaman 1e, who spent six months in the battle zone on the USS Signus, left Tacoma, Washington, Sunday 28th, where he has been stationed since the end of the war. His work there was office and watch man on one of the big transport ships that will hold a crew of 3,000 men. He will receive his discharge at Shoemaker, Shoemak-er, California. He will arrive in Delta Saturday August third. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dell Ross. Copt, and Mrs. H. A. Burke, and daughter, Judy, spent the week end with Mrs. Burke's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George A. Sampson. Captain Burke is stationed at Fort Douglas. |
