Red Cross. Under the chairmanship of Bob Spencer, 164 pints of blood were given at the SUSC Campus. Betty Neff, Cedar Blood Chairman, almost matched that effort with 150 pints from the community which were given at the Elks Lodge. Joan Mortensen and Earl Hanson helped as recruitment co-chairmen. co-chairmen. "The semi-annual blood drawing was very successful," stated Schramm. "We went 14 pints over ths 300 pint quota as assigned by the Intermountain Blood Center of the American Red Cross. I want to personally thank all of those who contributed con-tributed their important blood along with all the volunteer helpers such as the Doctors. Nurses, Pink Ladies, and school groups." A special bouquet goes out to the many employers, who gave their employees time off with pay to give blood. Utah International, Inc. employees numbered 25; Coleman Co. 15; along with others from State and Federal agencies, banks, construction companies, and retail outlets. Many housewives, bless them, were present at the drawing. Ernie Humphries, owner of the Arctic Circle Drive-Inn, gave a free malt to all blood donors. "The news media also deserves a pat on the back for their dedicated effort in getting the word to the public," By having a successful blood drawing, the citizens of Iron County are assured an ample supply of free blood at the Valley View Medical Center. Residents of , the county are also eligible for free blood if they receive Dlood in another hospital., This blood can be transferred from the Iron County Blood Account to the hospital administering the blood by contacting the local Red Cross Chapter. There have been some misconceptions about "free blood." All Red Cross Blood is free to the hospital. However, there is a small charge of approximately ap-proximately $12.50 charged to the hospital for the administration and processing of each pint of blood. This fee is usually passed on to the patient by the hospital. If blood was obtained from private blood banks, the fee would be somewhere between $50.00 and $75.00 for each pint administered. |
