Show SUSC debaters serve as ambassadors of good will A number of "sister cities" are being given plaques of friendship and cooperation on behalf of Cedar City and Southern Utah State College by SUSC debators on their way to eastern seaboard tournaments. SUSC debators left Monday for the Liberty Bell Tournament at the University of Pennsylvania February 28 - March 1 and the National Novice Championship at the University of Massachusetts March 8-9. Plaques will be given mayors of Philadelphia, Pa. and Amherst, Mass. where the forensic tournaments will be held as well as to mayors of Sterling, Colorado; Kearney and North Platte, Nebraska; Bowling Green, Ohio, and Salina, Utah. "We thought the cross-country trip would be an opportune time to promote goodwill between SUSC and Cedar City and also between SUSC-Cedar City and other parts of the country," Steve Van Dyke, SUSC debate coach, said. "Via our plaques we will encourage en-courage the sharing of ideas on projects and in areas where our interests are similar. We believe that through such sharing we may find viable solutions to similar problems in our respective communities," Van Dyke said. Packets of materials about Cedar City and SUSC will be dispersed along with the plaques with the focus on continued communication and sharing of information between the cities involved. SUSC debators making the trip include Calvin Rollins and Steve Cook, Kearns, Becky Workman, Salt Lake City, and Sue South-wick, South-wick, Bountiful. All four are SUSC freshmen. The three-week trip tentatively includes the Beehive Invitational Tournament in Price, Utah, March 14-15. |
