Garth Jones, Representative from Iron and Kane Counties makes report on legislative progress at Cedar City Chamber of Commerce membership meeting Friday. Chamber hears report on Skywest progress Expansion and development of Skywest in the Southern Utah area was the subject of Thales A. (Tad) Derrick, director of marketing as he appeared Friday noon at a membership meeting of the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce. The relatively new airlines based in St. George has grown steadily over the past several years until it now serves seven terminals with 19 aircraft Derrick stated. The development of Skywest Airlines was detailed by the marketing specialist through means of a slide presentation coupled with factual information on growth and development. A multi-service organization Skywest offers a number of specialized service to the aircraft air-craft industry of southern Utah. Derrick stated. Services of the organization include interlines agreements making it possible to ticket passengers through to their final destinations; scenic flights, flight instruction, charter tlights. aircraft sales, aircraft service and aircraft maintenance. In addition Skywest has joined into an agreement with Avis Rent-A-Car to offer car rental services at each of the organization's terminals. Currently Skywest has counter facilities in St. George. Cedar City, Salt Lake City, Moab, Provo and Bullfrog Basin in Utah and Las Vegas, Nev. Three flights a day are offered to Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, he indicated. Currently Skywest is operating 19 aircraft, they have 50 employees, em-ployees, seven ticket counters. For comparative purposes Derrick indicated that in August of 1973 Skywest boarded 350 passengers. For August 1974 passenger boarding had risen to 14(H). During 1974 total boarding reached 11,850 and with 2,906,000 passenger miles recorded for the year. Currently Skywest is looking to the purchase of additional aircraft air-craft to provide more extensive flight opportunities. Being considered is the acquisition of a new turbo-jet aircraft. At 'he same meeting Garth Jones, Representative to the Utah Legislature from Iron and Kane counties. Rep. Jones reviewed many of the legislative matters and reported that the recent meeting with Utah's Congressional delegation in Washington concerning con-cerning phasing out and wilderness proposals at Zion National Park was very meaningful. He also reported that a meeting last week with the delegation and representative of Kaiparowitz and the alunite developments should develop some response concerning government delays on the proposed developments. The Amtrack resolution introduced in-troduced by Rep. Jones was passed. He reported that the agency shop bill was debated and defeated. Jones was concerned with the shoplifting bill that would be under consideration in the house this week. He felt that the bill w as taking a positive approach to a real problem that exists throughout the state and nation. ' There is going to have to be some pencil sharpening when it comes to money matters." he state. "I'm concerned about money matters and what will happen. I don't want to increase taxes and feel that everylxidy w ill have to get along with less to reach the balanced budget which is required of the state " |
