Show Harmon to speak at Jr. High PTSA information meet ; , j ; Would it alarm you to know that there are 9,000,000 alcoholics in the nation and 150,000 of them are between the ages of eight and twelve. Many would like to believe that it can't happen in Cedar City; not to our children; but it can and does with increasing frequency. In 1973 in Iron County nine cases were referred to court concerning con-cerning Junior High and High School students. In 1974, 32 court referrals were handled for this same age group, a tremendous increase, especially considering that court officials estimate that only one out of ten cases are delt with by the court. Dr. Stephen K. Harmon, an assistant professor at Southern Utah State College and a noted DR. STEPHEN K. HARMON lecturer in the health education field, will be the guest speaker at a meeting called by the Parent Teacher and Student Association at the Cedar Junior High School to discuss this subject. The meeting will be held this evening, Thursday, Feb. 2G at 7:30 p.m. on the third floor of the West Building. President Bonnie J. Smith will conduct a short business meeting and Lou Fehterol and Mark Slack will provide musical entertainment. The guest speaker attended Westminster College, Cal State and the University of Utah where he received his BS and Ph.d degrees and was granted the NDEA Fellowship for three years. He is a native of Salt Lake City and is married to the former Marsha Overfelt. Dr. Harmon has a great interest in young people and hopes through his lectures to help both parents and their children avoid those problems which are related to drub and alcohol usage among juveniles. Time will be provided for a question and answer period following his remarks. |
