As a young girl Mrs. Spcndlove picked and chopped cotton, helped in the garden and helped her mother with the canning. Elwin T. Spendlove met, wooed and wed her while he was stationed in Pine Bluff, Arkansas during a stint in the army. He is the son of the late John W. and Mattie Spendlove, natives of Hurricane. The Spendloves lived in several places during their life together but have spent the past 10 years in Cedar. Her work experience includes in-cludes nursing and she is now an assistant chief operator for Bell Telephone Co. Mrs. Spendlove's father, Aubrey Rustum lives in St. George and her three daughters: Mrs. James R. Reeve (Elaine), Mrs. Kay M. Davis (Leilani) and Mrs. Richard Green (Celesta) reside in Cedar. She has three grandchildren. "A smile for everyone" was the caption in this "Woman of the Year's" yearbook. "She's gone one step further in being helpful and generous to many." Mrs. Helen Russum Spendlove was chosen "Woman of the Year" by the Phi Sigma Alpha Sorority last week. She received this honor because of her outstanding out-standing contributions to the sorority, her husband, her children and grandchildren, her Church and her community. com-munity. Born at Benton, Yazoo County, Mississippi she was the second of three children. She was "a bit of a tomboy" as she grew up in the Mississippi River area catching fish, riding rafts, |
