Show Carter defeats Stobbe to win Tourney K A '"Jf t . ... , W '; The Cedar 78 Tennis Opener ended this week and tournament director Frank Stobbe said the event was a big success despite its being beset with scheduling, logistics and wind problems. The seeding went true to forn as top seeded players advanced to the final rounds as expected. A total of 18 trophies were awarded to the 1st and 2nd place finishers in each event, and 13 individuals received these prizes. In the Men's Singles, Frank Stobbe was ousted by young tiger Curtis Carter in a hard fought three set match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Both players were exhausted at the finish. Carter and Stobbe nulled themselves together, though, and won the Men's Doubles with a fairly easy 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Paul Cahoon and Mike Searl. In the up and coming boys 15 division it was number one seeded Lane Stobbe winning over Neil Mathews by identical scores of 6-3, 6-3. Mathews had advanced with upset victories over David Gregerson and Stuart Jones to re-establish himself as a threat in the boy's events. The Women's contests also saw the favorites winning as Anne Sundwall of Kanab FINALISTS IN TOURNEY. Kelli Carter and Sandy Bryant won the Doubles event as expected with a 6-0, 6-2 walk over Rina and Julie Stobbe. The mixed doubles saw nine teams enter, for the largest turnout so far in this division. It was the same story with a different verse as favored Bill Kringlen and Sandy Bryant continued their victory string over Frank and Rina Stobbe with a 6-2, 6-3 win. These two teams have met in the finals of four tournaments now with the results the same. Stobbe urged all area tennis players to get out and sharpen their game for the rest of this season's events. Everyone is looking foward to the next tourney scheduled for June 29 - July 8 and directed by Mike Searle and Paul Cahoon.
