Show T-Birds gals eliminated at Regional tourney "We didn't play up to our capabilities," is how Southern Utah State's Joy Wood, women's softball coach, felt after her T-Birds closed out their 1977 season. The lady T-Birds finished 15-8 on the season after Josing two games at the regional tournament in Greeley, Colorado, last week. SUSC lost its opening round game to powerful Arizona State 10-1 before bowing out to Utah State 7-4. "Our hitting didn't come around," states Wood. "That was our downfall." The season did have its bright spots. The lady T-Birds T-Birds were Intermountain Conference co-champs and placed second in the conference con-ference playoffs. Pitcher-outfielder Cheryl Eyraud, senior from Caliente, Nevada; Georgia McGuire, senior, outfielder, Heber, and sophomore righthander Denise Wood, Minersville, were named all-Intermountain all-Intermountain Conference. Eyraud and Wood, along with sophomore outfielder Lori Lambros from Roy, were named to the all-IMC Tournament team. Wood was selected IMC coach of the year. On the season four T-Birds batted .300 or better, led by Eyraud's .469 and followed by Kim Woodrum, freshman, fresh-man, catcher from Las Vegas (.408), Apryl Killpack, junior from Ferron (.375) and McGuire's .310. On the pitching side, Wood led the staff in wins with a 7-5 7-5 record to go along with a 1.76 earned run average. Eyraud was 6-2 with a 1.25 earned run average. SUSC had but two seniors on this year's squad; hopes will be high for the 1978 season. |
