' i if ! vl WW i ) t - ; Brad Jackson, with three first place finishes, led the Cedar City High School Track and Field team to the 3A State Championship Saturday on the campus of Weber State College in Ogden. The Redmen garnered a total of 88 points to outdistance out-distance surprising Dixie who placed second with 74 points. Jordan finished third and David High was fourth. It is the first state championship in athletics for the Cedar City High School -- and for that matter Region 11 -- since they moved into the 3A classification. In addition to Jackson's contributions with victories in the 100, 220 and 440 vard dashes the Kedmen also had three other first places to account for the major portion of the point output. Richard Adams closed out an outstanding career in his speciality, the two mile, with a state meet record and a first place finish. His time was 9:52 minutes. He earlier had set a new 3A record of 9:45 in the event. Vance Ma theson also went in the record books for the meet with his 14.9 timing in the high hurdles. Ma theson captured first place in the event and aided the Redmen cause with a third place finish in the intermediate hurdles. Kendall Webster was the other first place winner with the top effort in the long jump with a leap of 21 ft. 3 inches. Joe Wells, leading field-man field-man for the Redmen throughout the season, came through with second place finishes in both the shot put and the javelin. Others who picked BRING HOME CROWN. Members of the Cedar City High School Track and Field Team were escorted into town Sunday afternoon atop the Fire Truck after capturing the State 3A Championship 'in competition Saturday at Weber State. up valuable points on the way to the State Championship Cham-pionship were Nathan Johnson with a sixth place finish in the long jump; Steve Hunter, with a fourth place finish in the 8i)0 yard run; and the medley relay team composed of Jim Reese, Neil Giles, Jay Esplin and Kendall Webster finished sixth. The Redmen mile relay team finished second, but was disqualified in the event. For five members of the Redmen squad the season is not yet over. The top 12 participants in time and distance in all classifications of the state have been invited in-vited to participate in a Desert News sponsored track and field meet to be held Saturday in Salt Lake City. Invited to participate from Cedar High are Brad Jackson, Vance Matheson, Joe Wells, Richard Adams and Kendall Webster. |
