Show Cedar Tracksters enter AAU Jr. Olympics Four Cedar City youths will be heading for Boise, Idaho this week to participate par-ticipate in the Region 10 AAU Junior Olympic meet to .1 held Friday evening and Saturday. The four-man contigent is Ixung headed by Brad Jackson of Cedar City who will participate in both the 100, 440 yard dashes as well as the 440 yard relay team. Also participation in the senior division of the competition will be Nathan Johnson in the long jump. Two Cedar City High School students, Scott Henderson and Kevin Webb will be participating in the intermediate division (those who did not turn 16 prior to January of this year.) The four have won their way to the Region meet, representing the 11 Western States, through state and district competition. The state AAU meet was held at Provo High School June 28 and 29. In that meet Jackson set two new State AAU records. He was clocked at 9.6 seconds in the 100 yard dash and turned in a 48.7 second timing in the 440 yard dash. This participation in the senior division, Nathan Johnson won the long jump with a leap of 22 feet 4'A inches. Participating in the intermediate in-termediate division Henderson Hen-derson won first place in the high jump and Webb captured cap-tured the 880 yard run. From there the foursome advanced to the District meet held this past week at Twin Falls, Idaho. Represented were teams from Utah and Idaho although the district represents a broader geographical area. In that meet Jackson again captured the 100 yard dash and the 440 yard dash. His time in the 100 was 9.5:5 and he was clocked at 49.1 in the 440. In addition he teamed with Jeff Hoskinson, Hillcrest; John Talley, Olympuis and Eric Johnson of Provo to capture the 440 yard relay title. They ran under the sponsorship of the Cottonwood Heights Track Club. In the process the team broke the In-termountain In-termountain record for the event with a time of 43.2 seconds. At the Intermountain meet Johnson captured second place in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet 7 inches. He was bested by just one-half inch by an entrant from Boise, Idaho. In the Intermediate class Scott Henderson won the high jump at 6 foot 2 inches and Kevin Webb breezed to a victory in the 880 yard run with a time of 2:06. Jackson and Johnson graduated from Cedar High School this spring. Jackson will enter Brigham Young University this fall and Johnson will study at Southern Utah State College. Henderson and Webb have completed their sophomore year at Cedar High School and will be juniors this fall. |
