F A marching band contest ' featuring six of the nation's I top high school bands will be held July 17 at 6 p.m. at I Thunderbird Stadium, Southern Utah State College. Bands from Illinois, I Minnesota, Wisconsin and California will perform before a southern Utah audience following competition com-petition held the night before in Los Angeles, Joseph Lamoreux, SUSC director of bands, said. The Monday evening performance w ill feature the latest show concepts in corps style drill, Lamoureux said. "This particular style includes in-cludes the use of flags, rifles and multiple percussion. It is currently the most popular style of drill in the United States and is the one used by the SUSC marching band." Judging for the contest will be under the auspices of the Mid-America Judging Association. "For many years bands have stopped in Cedar City to practice for competition being held elsewhere," Lamoureux said. "Now, for the first time, area residents will have the opportunity to see such competition themselves." Participating bands include in-clude the Royal Cavaliers, Van Nuys, Ca., past champions of national Veterans of Foreign War Competition; Crown High School, Carpentersville, 111.; Willmar High School, Willmar, Minn.; Ricori High School, Cold Springs, Minn., current VFW national champions; Oregon High School, Oregon, Wis.; and Dekota High School, Dekota, 111. Individual tickets for the concert will cost $2 each. Special group rates of $1.50 each for 20 or more people are available and families |
