Some of them were: International Year of the Child: Current Education Issues; ERA; The Changing roles of our schools Pertain to Women in Employment, Roles of Women. Teenage Pregnancy. Rape. Vandalism. Van-dalism. Abortion. Humanism. Moral Values. Media-Information or Manipulation. Pornography, Homosexuality. Laws and Lesialtion, etc. It was reported I ha I homsexuality was growing at a a rapid rate in Ihe country. One of the reasons lor its rapid growth is the fact that there is no . organized opposition. Anita Bryant was the most outspoken out-spoken opponent, and she and her family suffered greatly because of it. Another outstanding feature of the convcn t i on was the address given by Olive Osmond, mother of the famous Osmond family. She spoke of the solving of family problems by: 1. Daily reading of the scriptures. 2. Listening to LDS Church leaders. 3. Studying them out in their own minds. 4. Prayer. 5. Family Home Evening. She stated their life is anything but glamorous and they have much stress and strain, but they have always worked together to achieve . their goals. Nearly 1 .000 women attend " from throughout the state " including the following from the Iron Mission Region in Cedar City: Ann Hansen, president; Marlene Riddle, who was elected as Area -Representative for Dixtrict X including Iron. Washington. Reaver. Piute. Garfield, and Kane coun- tics: Vickie Carlson. Iron Mission Region publications chairman. -Also attending was Anne Lcavitt. a member of the state board of UA of W. Mrs. Hansen participated in the Leadership workshop by giving a presentation on the successes in the Iron Mission Region. IxK-al meetings on the various resolutions are held monthly in Cedar City on the third Friday at 7:30 p.m. usually at one of the Elementary Schools. Any interested women are ured to join. There are also organizations in Parowan, Hurricane. Kanab and St. George. as an instutition. and to "promote recommitment to marriage in the traditional sense, promote the return to the conjugal partnership and promote the return of dual leadership in the family." at the annual meeting of the Utah Association pf Women held recently in Salt Lake City. The groun also continues to oppose the Equal Rights Amendment, and to stand for equality of women and support additional legislative changes to eliminate any remaining discrimination against women. Guarantees to support employment of women were also backed. The group will support existing laws specific to the rights of working women, will work to update such laws and work toward enforcement of laws protecting working women. On pornography, members opposed sale and promotion of sex-oriented matierals for children and adults, encouraged the enactment of strong federal, state and local laws to control the distribution and s;ile of pornographic materials, and encouraged citzen action to oppose displaying and selling of pornographic materials and the use of sex-oriented materials in the classroom. In a resolution concerning "meda" the women urged the media to reduce sex. violence and profanity in v programs; seeks equal time for "pro family" views to offset the "feminist" viewpoint, and urged the media to promote "responsible" advertising and 1 be more "sensitive" to audience composition Three separate resolutions dealing with education were passed by members. O.ic advocate that members, contact school district superintendents, to express support for adult high school programs for women. The second urged members, individually and collectively, collec-tively, to inform the National Education Association and its I'tah counterpart of their opposition op-position to the ERA. The third called on members to get involved in the decisionmaking decision-making process of their local school boards and programs. Members opposed abortion on demand and |
