Show Honorary Degrees will be Granted by SUSC at Graduation Ceremonies said. Farnswsorth was born in Beaver, attended the Murdock Academy and graduated from Brigham Young High School in Provo. He completed his first two years of medical school at the University of Utah and .graduated from George Washington Medical School. Honorary doctorate degrees will be awarded by Southern Utah State College to David L. Bigler and posthumously to Dr. Reed W. Farnsworth. The degre presentations will be made at SUSC's 82nd annual commencement exercises June 1 on the upper campus quadrangle. Ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. "Both of the award recipients exemplified extraordinary service to Southern Utah State College -while serving as members of the SUSC Institutional Council," Orville D. Car-nahan, Car-nahan, SUSC president, indicated in making the announcement of the awards. "We are most pleased to recognize this unselfish service." He returned to Utah three years later as assistant district director and in 1963 took charge of U.S. Steel's public affairs for Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Arizona, and New Mexico. In January of 1978, he was promoted to Western States Public Affairs Director for U.S. Steel in San Francisco. Bigler served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and during the Korean War. He has taken a leadership role in many community, educational, and business endeavors, among them the Federation of Ropcky Mountain States, the Utah Urban League, and the Utah Westerners (an associaton of wrjters and scholars dedicated to the study of Utah and western history). He also served as vice president of the Utah Manufacturers Association and vice president of the Utah Mining Association. He and his wife, Evah, are the parents of three daughtrs and one son. They currently live in Walnut Creek, California. , ' Reed W. Farnsworth" Following a gear's internship in-ternship at the Salt Lake County Hospital, he began a practice of general medicine that spanped 37 years, all in Cedar City. He delivered over 6,000 babies, served as ' president of the Utah State and Southern Utah Medical Societies and as a member of the Council on Rural Health., of the American Medical Association. Farnsworth served as president of many civic organizations including the Jaycees, Sons of the Utah Pioneers, Cedar City Art Committee, Iron Counmty Historical Society, Cedar City Lions Club and Cedar City Rotary Club. He was the 1971 recipient of the Utah State Medical Associaton Community Service Award ' ! and the 1976 SUSC Alumni ! Associaton Distinguished I Service Award. He had ;many and varied interests. : He married the former Ethel Walker. They are the parents of three sons and one daughter. Bigler graduated with a B.A. degree in journalism from the. University of Utah, While there he was editor of the daily Utah Chronicle, and was elected a member of the Owl and Key honor society for senior men. He worked breifly as a United Press correspondent in Salt Lake City before beginning his career with U.S. Steel. ' He started at the USS Geneva plant near Orem as , a training instructor in the industrial relations department. In 1954, he was promoted to staff assistant for training and later that year became public relations field representative represen-tative in the company's Cleveland, Ohio, district. David L. Bigler Bigler7who is now western area director of public affairs af-fairs for United States Steel Corporation, served for eight years (1969-1977) as a member of the SUSC Institutional In-stitutional Council. Farnsworth represented SUSC (then known as College of Southern Utah) as a member of the Utah State University Board of Trustees from 1959 until 1965. His direction and influence in-fluence as a trustee helped in the establishment of SUSC as a four-year college, and subsequently in the granting of fully independent status to the institution in 1965. He "" was a member of the SUSC Council from 1965 until 1975. He died May 26, 1976. A series of activities related to SUSC commencement com-mencement begins Thursday. Thur-sday. Events will include an annual art exhibit (Thursday (Thur-sday thorugh June 22, Braithewaite Fine Arts Gallery), vocational commencement com-mencement exercises (Thursday, 7 p.m., Upper Campus Quadrangle), Thunderbird Awards Banquet and Assembly (May 23), baccalaureate services (May 31, 7 p.m.), President and Mrs. Car-nahan's Car-nahan's reception (im- mediately following baccalaureate bac-calaureate services), a baccalaureate buffet (following the reception), and commencement exercises (June 1, 9 a.m.). "Both Mr. Bigler and Dr. Farnsworth demonstrated strong leadership in academic and student affairs, af-fairs, in finance, in matters relating to college development and in other areas," President Carnahan |
