Show UAW Convention Reported PAPOWAN - At the meeting of the Northern Iron County Region of the Utah Association of Women in Parowan, Dawn Hanks, first vice prsident reported her attendance at the state meeting in Salt Lake City April 28 and 29. She said there are 35 women now on the State Board with a 12 Task Force Committee doing research and publications. Eighteen topics such as "Feminism or Familism. ERA Education, Vandalism. Abortion, Teenage Pregnancy, are now available free to the public libraries and in a packet for $10.00 to others. Also a monthly bulletin is available to members or by subscription of $10.00 a year to others. Being asked why LDS women should support this organization, Nina Palmer, general president, replied, "Because of the nature of our belief in the separation of church and state, it is not enough for us to be actively involved in our church work. We must be well balanced, in church service and civic service to be a truly effective ef-fective American. Political issues are not (and should not) be studied in our religious ; services, even though we are encouraged to become informed on all issues that affect our lives. The Utah Association of Women is organized to accomplish this very task." With 205 chapters in Utah now, membership has risen to about 3,000 women committed to preserve the family unit and our basic freedoms. The theme for the coming year, "Educate for Action" is in cooperation with the International Year of the Child. Georgia Petersen, Interstate In-terstate chairman, reported 19 states organized now to share this information. A new handbook will be ready by fall. Last year these women collected 20,000 signatures in three days to protest the passing of the ER Amendment. Amend-ment. Know your Candidate nights were sponsored in many areas, also special speakers and studies of bills -in Congress were held. Dixie L. Nelson, Salt Lake City, is the new State President. Marlene Fife Riddle, Cedar City is the representative of Area 10, which includes Beaver, Paiute, Wayne, Iron, Garfield, Gar-field, Washington and Kane Counties. Connie Robinson, Paragonah is the new president of the Northern Iron County Region with Dawn Hanks as first vice president, Janet Hughes, second vice president; Elizabeth Zaleski secretary, Iris Dalton treasurer, Miriam Lister REsource chairman and Roxanna Johnson Parliamentrian. Marie Green, Anna Stubbs and Elaine Terry are heading chapters in Parowan. DeAnn Robinson ; ion Paragonah and Connie Wicker in Summit. Elizabeth Zaleski, DeAnn Robinson, Che Smith, Pam Stubbs also attended the state meeting. |
