Show March of Dimes Marathon Runners limber up 586-6875. Both SUSC coeds are experienced Marathon runners; Lambros was the Marathon secretary last year also. Runners for the Southern Utah State College March of Dimes Marathon are urged to do their long-distance training at night. "It's going to le mighty cold running in January and since many of the runners will be covering their five or ten miles at night, it's a good idea to get the lungs accustomed ac-customed to the cold," Dave Furuta, Marathon Chairman, Chair-man, said. To date, nearly 50 SUSC students and a dozen faculty-staff faculty-staff members have committed com-mitted their time to "Run For Those W ho Can't" in the January 27-29 trek to Salt Lake City. "We plan to begin at noon at the Cedar City Post Office on January 27," the Brighton, Colorado, senior said, "Sterling Church, SUSC Dean of Students, will be the first runner again this year." Faculty-staff members will run the first ten miles up Cedar Canyon, then SUSC students and other volunteer runners will take over. This year, women students will run five miles each, male students will run ten miles, and faculty-staff runners will each cover one mile. Marathon runners will go over Cedar Mountain and up Highway 89 to reach the University of Utah Special Events Center sometime on the afternoon of January 29. The SUSC fund-raisers will appear on television again this year as part of the Utah March of Dimes Telerama. "Last year we raised over $8,(XK) for the Infant Intensive In-tensive Care Unit at the U of U Medical Center. This year we hope to top $10,000 and even reach the $20,000 mark for this very special hospital unit," Furuta said. SUSC students have staged the 310-mile run each year since 1974 when the idea was conceived as a fund-raising venture for the March of Dimes fight against firth defects. Since then, several thousand dollars have been raised and a school tradition developing around a core of experienced student volunteers. "Anyone who wants to work on the Marathon is welcome to do so. If you don't want to run, contact us anyway. There are many, many things that must be done to make the Marathon a success," Furuta said. Along with the canvassing done along the Marathon route, a Gong Show, football tournament, a commando basketball game have been planned as fund-raising events. All interested volunteers should contact Marathon secretaries Val Rainey at 586-4923, or Lori Lambros at |
