Albert M. Orton was named top Emergency Medical Technician Instructor in the State of Utah at award ceremonies held Thursday afternoon, December 8th, in Salt Lake City on conjunction con-junction with the first Clinical Conference on Pre-Hospital Pre-Hospital Care. More than 500 nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, and emergency first aide instructors in-structors attended the three day conference sponsored by Emergency Medical Associates and Utah Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. Mr. Orton has an enviable record of community service. ser-vice. He has been very active ac-tive in Scouting programs and holds the coveted Second Miler award. He belongs to the local Gun and Rod Club and is a certified gun safety instructor. Orton is also a member of the local volunteer fire department and has served as Fire Chief for several years. Mr. Orton has long seen the need for first-aid training in his various volunteer roles. As soon as the EMT program was made available in the area, he was one of the first to apply and completed in training in 1975. He then took further training in Northern Utah and qualified as an Emergency Medical Technician Instructor. He has coordinated EMT courses sponsored by the State Department of Health in cooperation with Dixie College SUSC, and local doctors. Since the fall of 1976, Mr. Orton has been assistant coordinator for one course held at Dixie College and coordinator of another. He travelled to Kanab, and coordinated a course there."" On Nov. 19th a training course was just concluded at SUSC which Mr. Orton also coordinated. This course was initiated to help train volunteer personnel to man an ambulance service for Iron County. Hospital personnel were also involved in this effort. Employed as head custodian at Parowan High School, Mr. Orton has rendered additional service to the school by being available at ballgames and travelling with the football team. He is often asked to put his emergency skills to work in the community. He has taken time to demonstrate demon-strate and lecture to Relief Societies in Parowan Stake and to Boy Scout groups. He has also given a course in Crash Injury Management to his fire crew. Albert is a native of Parowan and is the eldest son of Lois M. Orton and" the late Clark L. Orton. He and his wife are parent of four children. |
