Many have held onto the traditional mores, others have been abhorred by the commercialism of the last decade, others have even tried to boycott the celebration but the vanguard of Americans still looks to Christmas as a time for family and friends, bearing gifts and singing Christmas carols, festive food and joy everyone. And what's Christmas without music? Carols and religious songs are as historic and as much a part of the celebration as such newly discovered traditions as Santa Claus. Thanks to prime-time television programming, music at Christmas can now be enjoyed by more Americans than ever before with the majority of us getting a chance to hear our favorite Christmas songs performed by the best Hollywood has to offer. However, most music programs usually bypass the least impressionable age group, 18 - 25, the bulk of which are disciples of rock 'n' roll and contemporary music. This year alone, viewers have been treated to regulars at Christmas including the Bing Crosby family, Johnny Cash, Donny and Marie, the Carpenters and many others but NBC-TV offers the best rendition of a rock 'n' roll Christmas on THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL CHRISTMAS SHOW, which airs Friday, Dec. 23. 'The Midnight Special,' now in its seventh year as the most widely watched late-night rock show, will bring to life the spirit of rock 'n' roll and Christmas in a star packed show that will be hosted by the inimitable Pat Boone (left). Boone, one of the few stars of the '50s to have survived the turbulent '60s, still remains at the forefront of contemporary music. And more importantly, he has brought along the talents of his four lovely daughters Cherry, Lindy, Laury and Debby (right), whose number-one number-one hit single 'You Light Up My Life' became the biggest-selling and the only platinum single of 1977. 'The Midnight Special' will open with the Boone clan performing a rock interpretation of 'Joy to the World,' and will also feature Debby and Pat performing a duet to the classic David Gates (former member of Bread) song 'If.' Later in the show, the Boone family will get together for a medley of Christmas carols and will be joined by other special guest stars Phoebe Snow, Gates (center) Vand regular Wolfman Jack, J |
