Local firm awarded bids Blackburn and Gower Construction Company of Cedar City were the low bidders on an addition and alterations at the East Elementary at a bid opening held by the Iron County School District Wednesday of last 'week. The board accepted the base bid of $689,000 and an alternate of $5,000 but rejected-for the time being--a second alternate dealing with the addition of fire hydrants on the property. Four bidders participated in the bid opening with the Cedar City firm the low bidder and within the limits of the funding capabilities of the District based on a recent $3.4 million bond issue approved by residents for total district expansion and improvements. During the course of development of the East Elementary addition a three phase program was initiated and Phase I of the project was included in-cluded in the bid opening this past week. Phase I of the project includes the construction of six new classroom units, a multi-purpose room, additional ad-ditional restrooms and the connecting hallways. Alternate I includes blacktopping for a parking area and for the bus loading areas, which will be designed in connection with the proposed new addition. Two of the new classroom units will be added to the primary grades at the school nd will run south from the existing building from the Southwest corner. The additional four rooms and the multipurpose rooms will run north from the existing building near the northeast corner. Also included -in the upgrading of the facility is the installation of an additional boiler which was bid out at an earlier date and for which construction con-struction work has already began. Terms of the contract that will be issued to Blackburn and Gower provide for 365 calendar days for completion of the project. Second phase of the proposed improvements im-provements would be the conversion of three existing rooms into a more complete media center for the school and the rennovation of the existing media center into an enlarged office and faculty space. Board questioned Patrons of the East Elementary in attendance at the bid opening questioned the board as to when Phase II and III might be expected and to what extent the board was A willing to commit at this time. The representatives were informed that the amount of money allocated to the East Elementary was expended at this time and that further obligations in the construction of a new Enoch Elementary and rennovations at Parowan High School, were also committed in the bond issue. Anderson also questioned the Board regarding the use of bonding money identified for the East Elementary for the installation of the additional boiler--a project bid out at $56,780. "It was my understanding that the Board had committed that the boiler installation in-stallation would be taken out of other capital improvement funds of the district and not considered a Dart of the $800,000 allocated through the bonding money." Superintendent Morris responded that such a commitment had not been made, and that there did not exist at the present time $56,000 or any other monies that could be used to cover the cost of such a project. (continued from page 1) Morris indicated. Further Jay Overson, president of the Board, stated that the board is commited to its present course of action and to proceed with the other projects. Projects underway Keith Anderson, a resident with students at the East Elementary told the board that he felt the East Elementary did not have the same physical advantages of other schools in the District and that they would continue to pressure the board and to provide whatever assistance they could to insure that Phase II and III of |
